About RentSafeTO.com
Our Mission
RentSafeTO.com makes official City of Toronto building inspection data accessible to renters. We believe everyone deserves clear, honest information about where they live.
Every year, thousands of Toronto renters search for apartments without access to official safety records. This information exists, but it's buried in municipal databases that weren't designed for everyday use. We organize it so you can make informed decisions before signing a lease.
Data Source
All data comes from the City of Toronto's official RentSafeTO program. The city sends licensed evaluators to inspect rental apartment buildings every two to three years. They assess building condition, safety systems, maintenance practices, pest control, and more.
Toronto publishes this data through Open Toronto, the city's Open Data Portal. This is one of Canada's leading municipal open data initiatives.
Our Methodology
We display this data exactly as the city recorded it. No modified scores. No omitted buildings. No altered results.
Our role is to present official data in a searchable, readable format. We do not conduct independent verification of inspection results.
Scope and Limitations
RentSafeTO.com covers 3,500+ evaluated buildings across 25 Toronto wards. The city-wide average safety score is 88 out of 100.
The RentSafeTO program evaluates buildings with three or more storeys and ten or more rental units. Smaller buildings, single-family homes, and condominiums are not included. This means not all Toronto rental housing is represented in this database.
Evaluations occur every two to three years. Some building data may reflect conditions from prior inspection cycles.
Update Frequency
We check the Open Toronto portal daily for new data. When the city releases updates, we typically deploy them within 24 hours. Each building page shows its most recent evaluation date so you know how current the information is.
If the city issues corrections to previously published data, we update our records accordingly.
Our Commitment
This website is free and always will be. No paywalls. No account creation. No hidden fees.
The City of Toronto makes this data public. We are committed to keeping it accessible to everyone who needs it.
